Iran to Take Back Relics from Europe via Interpol
“According to the Interpol, a European bank was repairing its building. They reopened the safe deposit box inside the bank during which they realized that the owner of one of the boxes holds a number of antique gold and silver objects in its box,” Shirzad said.
“Ragarding the importance of the issue, through examinations by experienced cultural heritage experts, it was determined that the objects belonged to ancient Iran of the Achaemenid, Parthian and Sassanid eras and the owner of the fund is an Iranian citizen,” he added.
He continued, “After informing Tehran Interpol, with probes Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said that the objects belong to the Islamic Republic of Iran. So, coordination was made with the Judiciary.”
“Through due coordination, the request for judicial help to return the antiquities was prepared, and sent to the relevant officials via the Interpol communications channel as well as diplomatic channels, and the issue of restitution of property is being pursued,” Shirzad said.
In a relevant event, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi announced on September 30, 2019 that 1,700 clay tablets of ancient ages, which were given to US for research purposes but were no returned to Iran in due time because of Washington’s obstructions, have finally been brought back home.
He said in his tweet that as many as 1,700 centuries-old clay tablets have been returned to Iran by the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute.
He added that the tablets were returned to Iran through the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Presidential Legal Department.
The centuries-old clay tablets and fragments were given to the Oriental Institute in 1937 for research purposes. They were supposed to be returned to Iran during the presidency of George W. Bush who later refused to hand them over to Iran after levelling false accusations.
